Floppy Disks are EVIL
Floppy disks are slow and they break. Please always do the following:
- Always copy your file from a floppy to the hard disk (or network filespace) before working on it. Disks are easily worn out.
- If a floppy ever starts to give you problems, copy everything off it and throw it away.
- Never let the only copy of your document be on a floppy disk.
- In fact, never let there only be one copy of your document!
- If you use MS-Word, turn on the option "Always Create Backup Copy". If word crashes while saving, it can destroy your file.
If you know me, and you have your only copy of something on a broken PC (FAT formatted) disk, then bring it to me as I have some recovery tools and might be able to sort it out.
If you're a member of the university of Cambridge then the Computing Service offers a similar service, but they make a minimum charge (how much?). Go to Computing Service Sales (tel.34695, e-mail sales@ucs.cam.ac.uk), it is on floor 2 of the Cockcroft Building, next to Reception and the Help Desk.
